Have been interning with the rad guys at Print Club London for just under two weeks, in which time i've had the amazing opportunity to meet some great artists and illustrators alike. Spent some time at the design week Tom Dixon venue in west london printing some giveaways for the punters. Below is a James Joyce Illustration followed by an Anthony Burrill and Wilfred Wood collaboration print and then one of my own, (which was a sort of collaboration for the FoldBoat guys). London Bridge Hospital

After visiting my brother in London Bridge (Guy's) Hospital I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to explore this weird and mysterious environment. Taking particular interest of the machines and vehicles that occupied its ever expanding corridors. Corridors illuminated by a white glow that reflected the stark blues and yellows. I've never felt scared to be in an enclosed environment like this. The most foreboding part was the frequent encounter of big yellow bins, bunched end to end, labelled; infectious waste bins. From that point, the air seemed to have a very different taste.

TONBRIGE OUTING

Went to Tonbrige not to long ago with Sean and Jethro.
It's their hometown so it demands a visit every now and again.
Went to see Seans dad at work (the building that isn't paired up).
They had little booths inside the main building where they check to see
if a material is made of a dangerous substance. Looked incredible.

Uncharted Territory

My year one final illustration piece is about the quest of man into uncharted territory, in this case, the planets most unreachable peaks. This task can only be accomplished with the help of the man made tools (machines). The final pieces will illustrate how man discovers these peaks and endeavors to climb them, yet remain as a mere trace in the vast mountainous landscape.

New bicycle thanks. Eighty bucks, so half that and a bit more it was about 35 pounds.

Golfing with the most amazing view you ever did see, so unbelievably shit at playing but i beat Adam on his birthday, so bad times son.

Oh yeah, and i got pretty drunk, apparently it helps as it numbs the part of your brain that keeps you tense in your arms and whatever, so when your drunk you couldn't give a fuck so you just hit the dam thing. Worked pretty well to be honest.

The first two double page spreads for the Camden Streetzine titled Stable.

The zine is going to work alot like a narrative. It will focus on the facts and opinions of people who we met when we went to Camden to do our initial research for the project. We want the Camden people to be the voice of the zine and not let it be influenced by our own opinions. The only input we will have will be informative.

We decided on this because we felt that from people that we spoke to and the feelings they expressed it seemed that Camden was loosing its character in recent years, whether that due to more commercial development of maybe even more recently, the market fire.

The handmade, typewritten approach to the zine is to reflect Camden's bohemian persona. Something that we felt was essential to reflect as it represents the many opinions that are introduced within the zine. The title, Stable. (with a backward 'e'). was created with the idea that Camden is no longer as stable as it used to be, both from a merchants point of view, and from a local perspective. However, to the outsider it would seem that we are merely trying to reflect one of the main attractive elements of Camden- the stables market and what influence that has on Chalk Farm Road. It wouldn't be until one delves into the zine that they would uncover an array of positive and sometimes negative elements that Camden has to offer. But again, told purely through the use of quotations and other gathered resources.

Streetzine2

The first encounter of a 'Camden Local' was just outside of Chalk Farm Tube station. He was joyfully mocking me as I photographed the illuminated Chalk Farm tube sign and began to ask questions. I explained about the project briefing and ask him a few questions about the local area. He lived in nearby Primrose Hill and had been drinking in The Enterprise for years. He was also their resident painter and decorator. He said 'Camden is the best place in the country because everybody's nice. I'm on freeview, I'm Dave'.

Our second encounter of a 'Camden Local' was outside the Enterprise, a man named cliff who had been living in Camden for 36 years. He went into greater detail about the local area; telling us some interesting stories about how it had developed over the past twenty years, how the music scene had always been big in Camden. However the problem of commercialism had meant that his local would be swarmed on a Friday and Saturday night by who he referred to as 'Hampstead Wankers'. Cliff told us about a band called The Bad Robots who would be gigging on Thursday night in the Stables.

For this portrait i used a bit of tissue paper to act as a diffuser that covered my flash. In comparison to my other portrait shots you can see that the harshness of the light has been reduced allowing more details to come through in the image. It's a technique worth considering!

On the way down to check out the stables we stopped off to talk to a woman outside the popular bar/music venue Barfly. Her name was Catherine and she had been working at the Camden Barfly for about 5 months after a transfer from Brighton.

She said that Camden was more violent than Brighton and that it was mostly due to the amount of drugs easily available. 'A thirty year old woman took acid and crawled around outside like a cat, then pissed herself'. She also explained that there was a psychiatric institute in Camden that let out its patients during the day, it sounded like something out of a horror film. But on a lighter note Camden, and the Barfly especially are renowned for promoting new music and hosting epic gigs. Such as the likes of Bloc Party.

Streetzine on Camden High Street / Chalk Farm Road. 6th Oct 2008

Initial starting point was to gather research on the area in question.
Set off by taking a trip to Camden that night to start to get an idea of how the tone of Camden changes at different times of day.
I will focus on positive and negative elements of the area by talking to the local people. I want to keep an open mind when talking to people, as at this stage i don't want to confine myself to any particular theme or subject to base the Streetzine on.
I wanted to find out what makes Camden so high profile. Maybe find out something about Camden that is quite trivial and draws your attention away from its commercial reputation - something out of the ordinary that is more personal and compelling.
One of the group members said that we should look at the different styles of footwear of the local Camden people. Reflecting something not immediately obvious when observing the area and its inhabitants.

Some of the other ideas that i have are as follows:

Data Analysis.(Facts, figures and ratios etc)
Focus on different typographic styles used around the Chalk Farm Road.
Smells - (what and how often)
Touch - Surfaces
Sounds - Voices, traffic, sirens etc

Charity Shops

It's an absolute truth that trends are set by charity shops and not by organisations like 'The Future Laboratory'. In fact, it's not even the charity shops that set the trends, is the people who give away their clothes in the first place. What's ironic is that i'm sure most of these give-aways are on the pretence that, 'He/she doesn't wear it any more'. Possibly because they think its out dated. Your very wrong.

I'm happy that i had been persuaded by my mother to start shopping in charity shops 3 or so years ago. I find that being a student, saving money is a definite priority, and saving an awesome amount of cash on clothes goes a long way. What i find difficult to understand is why people would go and spend £270 on a plaid shirt from D&G when you can get an equivalent in style and quality for £2.70. Charity shops don't exclude named brands but what's amazing is that when the clothes are put together in a charity shop, it doesn't actually matter what label it is. They all sell for the same, and it made me realise just how pathetic brand endorsement is.
